Ivory Princess: Art Deco glamour from the 1990s

The Parastone figures that bring the elegance of the Jazz Age to the mantelpiece.

Sleek, stylised women in flowing gowns, reclining on stepped bases or walking with a cat at their side: the Ivory Princess figures of the 1990s bring the glamour of the 1920s and 30s to the mantelpiece.

Inspired by Art Deco

In the Art Deco years, sculptors created small figures of fashionable women in ivory and bronze, elegant, elongated and full of movement. They became symbols of the Jazz Age, and originals are now very valuable. Ivory Princess revisits that style in a modern material, with smooth ivory-toned bodies picked out with silver and gold.

Parastone, Enesco and Ed van Rosmalen

The Ivory Princess collection was made in the mid-1990s by Parastone and distributed by Enesco, and the figures were designed by the artist Ed van Rosmalen. Each model has its own name, such as “Lady with a Cat”, “Horizon” and “Rosa”, and many are dated around 1995. Some are signed on the base.

Collecting tips

  • Check fine details, such as fingers, hat brims and the tips of drapery, for chips.
  • Look for the model name and date underneath.
  • Display them in groups. Different models look wonderful together on a shelf or mantelpiece.

Alongside them is an Art Deco style lead crystal dancer, “Ophelia”, by RCR Royal Crystal Rock of Italy: a different modern take on the same Jazz Age look.
