Vintage 1940s–50s majolica style conserve pot (jam pot) by A J Wilkinson, Royal Staffordshire Pottery, England, design 936.
A J Wilkinson’s Royal Staffordshire Pottery in Burslem is the factory where Clarice Cliff began her career in 1916. She went on to create her famous Bizarre ware at the neighbouring Newport Pottery, part of the same business, from around 1927, and became art director of both Newport Pottery and A J Wilkinson in 1930. This jam pot is not one of her own designs, but it comes from the same works and carries the Royal Staffordshire mark, making it an affordable piece of that story for any Clarice Cliff or Art Deco collector.
The cream body is decorated with raised, hand-coloured fruit and leaves, with a fruit finial on the lid and a notch for a jam spoon. The maker’s mark is shown in the last photos.
I have three of these pots available, all in the same design. Each is sold individually, so you can buy one, two or all three: just choose the quantity you would like in the basket. The photos show one example; the others are very similar.
